Our First Tournament!

The Maastricht Gaels headed to Den Haag for a short friendly Gaelic Football tournament that featured Belgium, Dusseldorf, Den Haag, and Frankfurt.

We encountered Belgium first, although they appeared to be an experienced team. The Gaels managed to get one point in the first half and 3 points in the second half.

This was followed by a much better game against Den Haag. We switched around some players in different positions, and managed to score 6 points total against them.
The Gaels saved the best for the last, with a tough fight against Frankfurt, registering one goal among several threatening goal opportunities.

Declan, a first year student at Maastricht University says that he thoroughly enjoyed he thoroughly enjoyed his first Gaels tournament. The trip and the games brought the team close together and I’m buzzing to get back out on the pitch, he added. Freshly inducted into the team, Jacob echoes a similar sentiment about his first tournament. I had a great day out, and it was nice to get some practice playing against other teams and getting to know some of our team better.

Nevertheless, the tournament served as a great team bonding exercise, with several new members getting a first hand experience at playing in a European Gaelic tournament. The players return hungry for more, and the association is excitedly looking forward to the upcoming tournaments!

The Gaels will compete in the upcoming mini hurling and camogie tournament that will take place on our very own turf here in Maastricht, on the 25th of September! Show up from 14:00 – 18:00 to see some action!
